The earth is always at the centre of our attention. Soil is the fundamental basis on which to start to obtain a balanced ecosystem. Without a living land rich in organic matter, plants would hardly find an ideal habitat for growth. We firmly believe that a naturally healthy and strong vineyard can grow in a balanced way and with few external interventions, producing full-flavored grapes to obtain wines of character.
"Natural" quality wine is obtained starting from the vineyard; it is essential the culture without chemistry in the vineyard and cellar to make typical, unique and authentic wines, in stark contrast to the standardization of most of the wines on the market.
In the countryside:
-
Mowing the grass or working the soil in the row;
-
Targeted fertilizations in areas where it is necessary, with the sole use of plant products
-
Natural rebalancing of the soil with alternating rows of cereals (oats, barley) and legumes (vetch, broad bean, clover) or autumn processing of the ground only where necessary
-
Continuous experimentation with the aim of eliminating copper and sulphur, allowing an exponential development of beneficial insects and micro-organisms
-
Use of chromatic traps for the surveillance of the flavescence vector insect that we fight only with pyrethrum.
Our Vineyards are in Castelletto d'Orba, Valle Albarola and Rocca Grimalda, in the Rio Maggiore valley.
The territory of Ovada is crossed by the river Orba, and for us that we live here are two subzones, which are identified according to the meaning of the flow of the river: the right bank and the left bank of the Orba, we are lucky to have vineyards in each one.
Castelletto d'Orba
Here our vineyards grow on clear clay soils, with outcropping marls.
Exposure South West, about 300 meters above sea level, guyot rearing with pruning inspired by the Simonit and Sirch method, expertly transmitted by our friend Davide Ferrarese.
In this valley, we cultivate the Maia, Ottotori cru, on a calcareous marl plateau where the grass almost does not grow, and the crus of the Podej, Ventipassi and the Volpe, from which we also get the 299.
Rocca Grimalda
Here our vineyards grow on clayey, sometimes stony, soils.
Exposure North West, about 300 meters above sea level, guyot rearing with pruning inspired by the Simonit and Sirch method, expertly transmitted by our friend Davide Ferrarese.
We cultivate the Capovia cru, vineyard planted in the 60s, the Anpiota, Chardonnay vines of the early 70s and the modern Albarossa, characterized by young vines planted in 2006.
